AI job search tools: what to look for before you choose one

Seven questions that separate a useful AI job search agent from a spam cannon.

AI job search tools now range from resume rewriters to agents that search, write and apply on their own. They are not interchangeable. The wrong one can send hundreds of weak applications in your name, which hurts more than it helps.

These seven questions separate a useful tool from a spam cannon.

1. Where does it look for jobs?

Tools that only read the big job boards see roles at the same time as everyone else. Look for one that also watches company career pages and the applicant tracking systems companies post to first, ideally the specific companies you care about.

2. Does it judge fit, or just match keywords?

Ask how it decides a job is right for you. A good tool scores each role against your actual experience and tells you why, including the gaps. If you can't see the reasoning, you can't trust the filter.

3. Are documents written for each job?

A single generic resume sent everywhere is exactly what recruiters learn to skip. The tool should tailor the resume and cover letter to each role, from your real achievements, not generic filler.

4. Can you edit easily, and does it learn?

You will want to change things. The best tools let you edit by instruction and remember your corrections so you don't repeat them on the next application.

5. Who presses Submit?

This is the most important question. Check whether you can review every application before it's sent, set rules for what may go automatically, and what happens with form questions the tool isn't sure about. A good tool leaves uncertain answers blank and flags them rather than guessing.

6. How much volume does it encourage?

Be wary of pricing that sells thousands of applications a month. More volume usually means less fit. Tools built around a fit threshold and daily limits push you toward fewer, better applications.

7. What happens to your data?

You will share your resume, work history and possibly email access. Read the privacy policy: what is stored, whether it's used to train models, and how to delete it.
